Meet-and-Greet + Latinx Heritage Month

We gathered at Flat Tuesdays for our annual meet and greet. We also celebrated National Latinx Heritage Month and learned about the different student organizations, offices, and associations on campus that support our communities.

We had food, music, and a raffle! Students from HLSU, LHGSA, SACNAS, SHPE, McNair, Promise, ILE, and Staff and LHFA faculty participated!

End-of-Year Celebration

We gathered to celebrate our comunidad, the end of another academic year, and to announce the faculty who received the 2024 LHFA Excellence Awards. We also discussed our participation in Immigrant Appreciation Day (it went excellent!), LHFA’s relationship with the new Provost, and future plans for the association.

Immigrant Appreciation

The Latin&Hispanic Faculty Association, together with other affinity groups and organizations at UMBC, organized a celebration for this year’s “Immigrant Appreciation Day” on May 1st. There were panels, keynote talks, a mural where people could stories, international snacks, craft tables, and more. The events took place all around the campus.

Día de los muertos celebration / Meet and Greet

LHFA hosted with a handful of student organizations a Day of the Dead celebration / Meet and Greet.  Faculty and students got together to know each other, and about the different latin/hispanic associations on campus. Those who came, had a chance to color calaver, participate in our raffle, learn more about this celebration, and meet other Latinx and Hispanic people at UMBC. We even had the presence of our president, Dr. Sheares Ashby!

The Eminent Latin/Hispanic STEM Seminar: Sandra Cauffman

Sandra Cauffman, Acting Director of Earth Science Division at NASA, visited UMBC for meeting with faculty and students and giving a seminar titled “From Costa Rica to Mars: Reach, Strive, Achieve”. Ms. Cauffman provides executive leadership, strategic direction, and overall management for the entire agency’s Earth Science ~$2B portfolio, from technology development, applied science, research, mission implementation and operation. Prior to joining NASA HQ, Ms. Cauffman worked at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for 25 years serving on a variety of roles. She has participated in several projects in different programs including the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Series, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) Mission, a NASA mission to the red planet. Ms. Cauffman has been awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal and she is a two-time recipient of the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal. She is also a four times recipient of the NASA Acquisition Improvement Award, and numerous GSFC and HQ awards. She received a B.S. in Physics, a B.S in Electrical Engineering and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering, all from George Mason University. Ms. Cauffman was born in Costa Rica and is fluent in Spanish.

 

Carolina Guerrero en el Mes de la Hispanidad del Humanities Forum

Carolina Guerrero, CEO y co-fundadora de Radio Ambulante presentó  la charla del Mes de la Hispanidad del Humanities Forum el lunes 17, 2018.  Radio Ambulante, distribuido por NPR, es un podcast pionero en español que cuenta crónicas latinoamericanas en audio, celebrando la diversidad y complejidad de la región. (ver radioambulante.org). El Latino Hispanic Faculty Association (LHFA) junto con el Dresher Center for the Humanities anualmente patrocina una charla entre el 15 de septiembre y el 15 de octubre para celebrar el Mes de la Hispanidad en UMBC. En años anteriores se han traido figuras célebres como Lalo Alcaraz (caricaturista), Guillermo Gómez Peña (artista de performance), Marie Arana (novelista), Junot Díaz (novelista y ganador del premio Pulitzer) y Eduardo López (periodista y poductor de documentales), entre otros.
